Jonathan Wasserberg
Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon
Jonathan Wasserberg is a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. He studied medicine at Cambridge University then trained in spinal neurosurgery in Glasgow. He has been a consultant since 1998 and has a broad experience of spine surgery.
He carries out around 250 operations every year, mainly for sciatica and low back pain. He also carries out neck surgery for neck pain and arm pain. The majority of his patients do not require surgery and make a rapid return to normality with the aid of physiotherapy and in some cases injections.
Jonathan’s philosophy is to avoid surgery whenever possible and to look for the least invasive way of solving the patient’s problem. Often, prompt investigation with an MRI scan, followed by reassurance and some physiotherapy is all that is needed to get patients back to work. When surgery is needed he will choose the least invasive approach to minimise recovery time and discusses the options in detail before a final decision is reached.
Jonathan is married with two children. Although he loves his work he likes nothing more than a long walk on a Sunday followed by a pub lunch.
