The Hips
Many people suffer from pain associated with the hips. In the majority of cases, surgery is not necessary. Hip problems present the following symptoms:
- Groin / Buttock / Lateral Hip Pain
- Giving Way
- Decreased range of movement
- Decreased function
These symptoms are commonly caused by
- Arthritis (Oseteo or Inflammatory)
- Bursitis (Inflammation in soft tissues)
- Loose bodies
- Osteonecrosis (death of parts of the bone)
- Low back problems
Although the average age of hip replacement is 66 years, Arthritis can affect persons of all societies and age groups. Total hip replacement represents the most significant advance in orthopaedic surgery in the past 50 years. It has alleviated the pain and improved the mobility of thousands of people crippled with arthritis of the hip.
At The Joint Clinic, we begin treatment using the least invasive techniques. We regularly use Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) as we believe that the smaller incision and the keyhole approach will disturb the surrounding hip muscles far less. Also, the post operative rehabilitation period is quicker thus enabling patients to return to their normal activities, including sport and leisure, sooner.
By listening to patients and investigating their symptoms thoroughly using x-ray and, where necessary MRI, we can formulate a treatment plan specific to the individual. Communication and information is vital for patients and we will ensure that they fully understand the cause of their problem and the implications of the treatment. Our patients are part of the decision making process.
